The Sachen Foundation began in June 1998. Her Eminence Sakya Jetsun Chimey Luding Rinpoche aspired to establish an organization with the noble aim of preserving the Sakya tradition and teachings, and founded what was then called the Sakya Foundation in Washington State in the United States.
In 2015, H.E Jetsun Kushok Rinpoche expressed the wish to engage more in her personal practice and reduce her activities in the Foundation. She requested Khöndung Ratna Vajra Rinpoche to manage the Foundation as its chairman, while she remains as a Spiritual Leader, Teacher and Board member of the Foundation.
To mark a new beginning and renewal, Khöndung Ratna Vajra Rinpoche gave the Sakya Foundation a new name: the Sachen Foundation. This name is currently registered as a trade name used by Sachen Foundation while the legal process of changing names is underway. “Sachen” means “Great Sakya”, a clear reference to Sachen Kunga Nyingpo (1092-1158), a great spiritual leader and the first of the Five Supreme Sakya Masters who founded the Sakya tradition of Buddhism in Tibet.
The Foundation is a public foundation recognized by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (tax ID number: 91-1925472).
